Google Books Settlement Prompts Flurry of Last Minute Filings Opposing the Ruling
Google's plan to establish the world's largest online digital library and bookstore has prompted several parties to file last minute oppositions to the legal settlement allowing the company to do so. American companies such as Yahoo!, Microsoft and Amazon as well as several authors, publishers and copyright holders represented by the European Commission are all coming forward to voice their objections to an agreement that could potentially grant Google a monopoly on the competition for the availability and sale of millions of out-of-print books as well as price-setting power for those books. Despite the large benefit it would provide for readers and authors, disputes claiming a lack of privacy protection are currently being investigated by the Justice Department.

Yahoo! Updates Search Results, Messenger and Mail
Yahoo! has been making several updates to its search, messenger and mail products in an attempt to enhance user experiences. Changes to Yahoo! Mail include the ability to attach larger picture files to outgoing emails as well as other photo-sharing capabilities, increased social networking features and easier access to Yahoo! Mail from mobile devices. Users of Yahoo! Messenger are now able to select specific languages with which to operate Messenger, use an Updates tab that connects them to the latest social networking updates from friends and family, and perform free video chats with full video screen capabilities. Finally, updates to Yahoo! Search include new filtering options that allow users to sort search results by video, third-party sites or discussion forums, search controls that offer protection from viruses, spam or spyware while conducting research online, and a search assistance feature that helps narrow relevant search results over time based on a given user's search behavior.

More Search Monkey Enhanced Results Now Available from Yahoo!
Starting at the end of August, Yahoo! has released additional templates that allow users to add products, local businesses, news, events, or discussion pages to their search results pages. According to Yahoo!'s latest blog post concerning the subject, \"anyone who provides structured data according to the specified format will automatically gain Search Monkey default-on status, as long as it adheres to our terms of use.\" This is Yahoo!'s latest effort to automatically enhance search results.

Microsoft Developing a \"Bing and Ping\" Feature
Microsoft's new Bing and Ping feature allows Bing users to share search results with friends and family via Twitter, Facebook or email. The feature allows for the transfer of sports scores, local service recommendations, flight information, etc. to be transferred to Twitter or Facebook pages to instantly share relevant information with others. Microsoft is currently offering a preview of the service on its Facebook page.

AOL Names Former Yahoo! Executive and Peanut Butter Manifesto Writer as its President of Internet and Mobile Communications
Brad Garlinghouse has been hired as the president of Internet and mobile communications at AOL. He will oversee the engine's email and IM services as well as work on expanding the company's online display advertising business. Garlinghouse, a former Yahoo! executive, is best known for his \"Peanut Butter Manifesto,\" a report he wrote identifying major problems within the Yahoo! corporation, noting that the engine was \"being spread too thin, like peanut butter on toast.\" Garlinghouse asserts that the problems within AOL are not as dire as with Yahoo! and plans to turn things around for the corporation with a fresh strategy for competing with Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft.
